SIMMERL’S HISTORY<\/h1>\n

We <\/span>are often asked<\/span> why we are not<\/span> called <\/span>Kirchenwirt<\/span> but <\/span>SIMMERL<\/span>, although we are right next to the pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard. This <\/span>is easily explained<\/span>. The church <\/span>was built<\/span>after our house and is therefore younger. The historical <\/span>door frame<\/span> is marked with the year 1122. <\/span>However, probably the true age<\/span> goes <\/span>back even further. Already Celts inhabited this area and used the salt as well as the fertile soils of this area. In the Roman period, <\/span>when <\/span>Salzburg was known as <\/span>Juvavum<\/span>, the area around St. Leonhard was already populated a. <\/span>T<\/span>he <\/span>parsonage stands next to us on Roman foundation walls. From oral <\/span>traditions<\/span> it is known that the house was cultivated as a farm, post coaches,<\/span> shop and, of course, also as a restaurant<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, there are no exact written <\/span>records <\/span>regarding the <\/span>SIMMERL<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

HISTORY OF THE CHURCH<\/h2><\/h1><\/div>

In the <\/span>surroundings<\/span> of <\/span>Salzburg<\/span> the old pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard is surely one of the interesting buildings of art and culture. The age of the church <\/span>cannot<\/span> be ascertained<\/span> with certainty, <\/span>eventhough<\/span> it is know that<\/span> due to the proximity of the salt cave St. Leonhard was already very early settled.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is possible that the Augustinian chancellors of Berchtesgaden have erected a church here, as some parts of today\u2019s <\/span>church<\/span> date back to Roman times. For a long time St. Leonhard was the <\/span>religious center of the surrounding area until it became a branch church of <\/span>Schellenberg<\/span> in 1407.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

THE MYTH ABOUT THE UNTERSBERG<\/h2><\/h1><\/div>

Hardly a place has a comparable repertoire of stories and myths like the Untersberg. It is often called \u201c<\/span>Wunderberg<\/span>\u201d, \u201cmagical mountain\u201d<\/span>, \u201c<\/span>holy mountain<\/span>\u201d and many more<\/span>. Incomparab<\/span>le with other mountains of the <\/span>a<\/span>lpine <\/span>region, he has always inspired stories and legends. It <\/span>is traversed<\/span> by gigantic cave systems, which are still not fully explored. <\/span>These countless caves have been created by the leaching in the limestone<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

HISTORY OF ST. LEONHARD<\/h2><\/h1><\/div>

Until 1816, St. Leonhard belonged to the <\/span>F\u00fcrstpropstei<\/span> Berchtesgaden. When the Berchtesgaden land finally came to Bavaria, St. Leonhard <\/span>was connected<\/span> with the parish of <\/span>Gr\u00f6dig<\/span>. To this day, St. Leonhard is a popular pilgrimag<\/span>e church in honor of this saint. A<\/span>series of still preserved votive images, which tell of various prayer hearings, testify. Today, every year the Holy Thursday (beginning <\/span>6th<\/span> November) takes place the <\/span>Leonhardi-Ritt<\/span>, where numerous rider groups from the closer and wider surroundings participate.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>
